These functions may also be found in LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, eBay and other popular sites but we consolidate all these features into one site. This makes it easier for you to manage your information and easier for your colleagues to find you and your information.
We also differ from the other sites in that rather than serving a wide population, we focus on the sound and vibration community only. This maximizes the relevancy of the content and membership.
We do not discourage the use of the other social networking sites because there is a benefit to our members to be able to segregate their personal image and information from their sound and vibration profession.
But what we share with the other sites is the adoption of "Web 2.0" practices. In the old web model, information was authored and critiqued by the few to be consumed by the many. The new model is more user centric in which everybody is an author, critic, and consumer. This model has the advantages of speed, convenience, and information quantity, but comes with greater but distributed responsibilities. We will write more about this in a future blog post.
